Adolescents entering the adult world in the 21st century will read and write more than at any other time in human history. They will need advanced levels of literacy to perform their jobs, run their households, act as citizens, and conduct their personal lives. I first read the statement above, regarding the vital importance of literacy education, in a 2002 article by Richard Vacca, “From Efficient Decoders to Strategic Readers” in the journal Educational Leadership. It resonated with me even more powerfully when I read it again as the introduction to a chapter titled “The Power of Authentic Literacy” in Mike Schmoker’s 2006 book, Results NOW. For, not only is a lot of reading, a lot of writing, and a lot of talking about what we are reading and writing a key to thoughtful, engaged, and lasting learning, the kind of learning that spawns creativity and critical thinking, it is also at the heart of our focus on College and Career Readiness at Vintage High School and across the Napa Valley Unified School District. It has really hit home for me over the course of these past few months as I have worked as a member of the team focused on the ambitious redesign of our VHS Auto Program to meet the requirements of an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certified program.
